Research File Share (RFS) is suitable for research groups working on data sets that need high integrity, protection and accessibility. In particular, this service delivers a highly resilient storage solution that provides snapshots to allow fast recovery of lost files.
The service also offers researchers consistent backups, storing up to a month of data changes and a fast time to recovery if data is lost through its offsite secondary disk platform. Both systems are run in failover mode, which means the service can be switched to the secondary storage system if there is ever a major failure of the primary system. As the two disk storage systems are asynchronously replicated at hourly intervals, Research File Share delivers fast recovery times and is resilient to major data centre failures, with a recovery point objective (RPO) of 1 hour.
The Research File Share service also has high data integrity built into it through protection against silent corruption, offering yet another level of assurance that highly valuable data is protected.
The Research File Share key characteristics include:
Available on all research computing platforms
Optimised for large quantities of unstructured data, with no upper limit on the amount of data storage you can purchase
High availability due to fault tolerant design
Feature rich storage configured to snapshot data to allow users to quickly recover lost files (1 month window)
Support via UIS service desk
Other features of the Research File Share include:
Access 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
Supports SMB/CIFS protocols
Minimum purchase 2TB
Licences for 1, 3, or 5 years
